Morán et al. (2021) show that the medial premotor cortex (MPC) is responsible for selecting behaviors after recognizing sounds. For example, when we are standing in the middle of the street and we hear a car, the MPC chooses the appropriate motor command, in this case, to move quickly towards the sidewalk. Furthermore, the MPC does not care about the vehicle’s identity but only whether it pertains to the “vehicles” group. In other words, the MPC decides to which set of objects a stimulus belongs and thereby manages to derive it into a general behavior.
